PSM was at this time written by prominent and upcoming social and physical scientists. This issue includes 13 articles. Herbert Spencer's article in this issue, "The Study of Sociology -- The Educational Bias," predates the publication of his book The Study of Sociology later in 1873, and thus is an earlier treatment of the ideas presented there. Other articles in this issue include the lead article on earthquakes, the relationship between electricity and life by Fernand Papillon, and articles on the physical characteristics of the human races, the equality of the sexes, the strength of timber, the epileptic origin of Islam, and asphalt pavements, among others.
