Original publisher's dark brown boards with bright gilt decoration and titles to front cover and spine; boards have moderate scuffing and rubbing, wear to extremities of boards, a little fraying to extremities of spine. Cadger's map of a begging district in gilt on front cover and also printed opposite the title page. Hinges are cracked; binding is otherwise fairly tight with boards a little loose. Pages are clean, in excellent condition. A lengthy alphabetical catalogue of books then currently offered by the publisher is bound in. Book was published in 1874; it is NOT a modern reprint. . One of several editions of this classic work, this is the 1874 edition, a fairly early printing. The first 70 pages are occupied by three essays on the history, secret language and hieroglyphics used by vagabonds. The remaining 300 pages consist of the dictionary itself and a brief Bibliography. No author or editor is identified for this edition, but the author/editor of the original work was John Camden Hotten. . 8vo - 8" to 9" tall. 382 pages. C6
