Housman, A. E. A Shropshire Lad
Covers are brownish-olive buckram. Backstrip is sunned, cracked along its edges in places, bright gilt titles are intact. Some loss of backstrip at head and foot. Minor staining to front cover, more pronounced staining to back cover. Corners are gently bumped and slightly worn. Page ends are untrimmed. A copy of Housman's "Epitaph of an Army of Mercenaries" is glued to the front pastedown, and an early former owner's name is written on the ffep. . The book is SIGNED AND DATED (22 March 1954) "Tom & Grace Haber." Tom Haber was an eminent Housman scholar, his biographer, and author of The Making of a Shropshire Lad and several other books about Housman. Haber carefully recorded in complete detail, in pencil, all changes in this, the second edition of ASL, from the first edition, directly on the pages on which the changes occurred. He notes that copy of the first edition he used was AEH's own copy, and was read in the Rare Book Room of the Library of Congress. He listed and summarized these changes on the back pastedown: "Thus there were 33 changes in punct. , 6 in spelling. 4 new errors (all prob. From broken type. ) " In addition to carefully recording all of the changes, Haber made several notes to himself. For example, he refers to a comment made by AEH to H. Martin that "alterations [from Housman's manuscript] were made by the printer" to the first edition. This is supported by Carter, Sparrow, and White (CSW) , which quotes AEH as saying after the second edition was published that "last time someone played games with the punctuation" (p. 9) . Thus the second edition may be closer to what Housman intended than the first. However, as CSW notes, the second edition and subsequent editions still have errors (p. 9) . A slip of paper that appears to be in Haber's hand reading "His Own Copy" is laid in. It seems likely that the note may have been placed in the book by Haber to remind himself that the copy of the first edition that he examined in the Library of Congress was Housman's own. The second edition of ASL is scarce in its own right (as noted by CSW in 1982) , and this copy is a unique association copy as well.
